TALKING NEEDLES

The course dealt with the culture and political structure of India.
I chose to focus on the gypsy culture of North India and the piercing festival that
characterizes it.
I discuss the relationship of humans with needles since the dawn of history.
Tattoos and piercings are a form of social identity and a platform for self-expression.
Using rust in combination with shibori, a traditional Japanese dyeing technique, I "tattooed" the marks of the metals on the fabric.
The dress is decorated with the rusty metals as a kind of traditional Indian embroidery in its ornamentation.
